Equifax Says Cyberattack May Have Affected 143 Million Customers - NYTimes.com

Equifax, one of the three major consumer credit reporting agencies, said on Thursday that a data breach left Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers and other sensitive information for 143 million United States consumers vulnerable to hackers.

Criminals gained access to certain files in the company's system from mid-May to July by exploiting a weak point in a website application, according to an investigation by Equifax. The company said that it discovered the intrusion on July 29 and has since found no evidence of unauthorized activity on its main consumer or commercial credit reporting databases.

Hackers were able to retrieve birth dates and addresses, as well as credit card numbers for 209,000 consumers. Documents with personal information used in disputes for 182,000 consumers was also taken.

Equifax said that some personal information for British and Canadian residents was also hacked.

The data breach at Equifax is not the largest. Yahoo disclosed in September 2016 that 500 million user accounts had been hacked in 2014, followed by a second disclosure three months later that a different attack in 2013 compromised more than one billion accounts.

Equifax said that, in addition to reporting the breach to law enforcement, it had hired a cybersecurity firm to conduct a review to determine the scale of the invasion. The investigation is expected to wrap up within the next few weeks.

The company handles data on more than 820 million consumers and more than 91 million businesses worldwide and manages a database with employee information from more than 7,100 employers, according to its website.

''This is clearly a disappointing event for our company, and one that strikes at the heart of who we are and what we do,'' Richard F. Smith, chairman and chief executive of Equifax, said in a statement. ''Confronting cybersecurity risks is a daily fight.''

The company created a website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, to help consumers determine whether their data was at risk.

''While we've made significant investments in data security, we recognize we must do more,'' Mr. Smith said.

Three Equifax Inc. senior executives sold shares worth almost $1.8 million in the days after the company discovered a security breach that may have compromised information on about 143 million U.S. consumers.

The trio had not yet been informed of the incident, the company said.

The credit-reporting service said late Thursday in a statement that it discovered the intrusion on July 29. Regulatory filings show that three days later, Chief Financial Officer John Gamble sold shares worth $946,374 and Joseph Loughran, president of U.S. information solutions, exercised options to dispose of stock worth $584,099. Rodolfo Ploder, president of workforce solutions, sold $250,458 of stock on Aug. 2. None of the filings lists the transactions as being part of 10b5-1 scheduled trading plans.

The three ''sold a small percentage of their Equifax shares,'' Ines Gutzmer, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based company, said in an emailed statement. They ''had no knowledge that an intrusion had occurred at the time.''

Equifax said in its statement that intruders accessed names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and driver's-license numbers, as well as credit-card numbers for about 209,000 consumers. The incident ranks among the largest cybersecurity breaches in history.

Equifax shares tumbled 13 percent to $124 in extended trading at 7:49 p.m. in New York.

It's a sad reality in 2017 that a data breach affecting 143 million people is dwarfed by other recent hacks'--for instance, the ones hitting Yahoo in 2013 and 2014, which exposed personal details for 1 billion and 500 million users respectively; another that revealed account details for 412 million accounts on sex and swinger community site AdultFriendFinder last year; and an eBay hack in 2014 that spilled sensitive data for 145 million users.

The breach Equifax reported Thursday, however, very possibly is the most severe of all for a simple reason: the breath-taking amount of highly sensitive data it handed over to criminals. By providing full names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and, in some cases, driver license numbers, it provided most of the information banks, insurance companies, and other businesses use to confirm consumers are who they claim to be. The theft, by criminals who exploited a security flaw on the Equifax website, opens the troubling prospect the data is now in the hands of hostile governments, criminal gangs, or both and will remain so indefinitely.Hacks hitting Yahoo and other sites, by contrast, may have breached more accounts, but the severity of the personal data was generally more limited. And in most cases the damage could be contained by changing a password or getting a new credit card number.

What's more, the 143 million US people Equifax said were potentially affected accounts for roughly 44 percent of the population. When children and people without credit histories are removed, the proportion becomes even bigger. That means well more than half of all US residents who rely the most on bank loans and credit cards are now at a significantly higher risk of fraud and will remain so for years to come. Besides being used to take out loans in other people's names, the data could be abused by hostile governments to, say, tease out new information about people with security clearances, especially in light of the 2015 hack on the US Office of Personnel Management, which exposed highly sensitive data on 3.2 million federal employees, both current and retired.

Besides the severity and scope of the pilfered data, the Equifax breach also stands out for the way the company has handled the breach once it was discovered. For one thing, it took the Atlanta-based company more than five weeks to disclose the data loss. Even worse, according to Bloomberg News, three Equifax executives were permitted to sell more than $1.8 million worth of stock in the days following the July 29 discovery of the breach. While Equifax officials told the news service the employees hadn't been informed of the breach at the time of the sale, the transaction at a minimum gives the wrong appearance and suggests incident responders didn't move fast enough to contain damage in the days after a potentially catastrophic hack came into focus.

What's more, the website www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/, which Equifax created to notify people of the breach, is highly problematic for a variety of reasons. It runs on a stock installation WordPress, a content management system that doesn't provide the enterprise-grade security required for a site that asks people to provide their last name and all but three digits of their Social Security number. The TLS certificate doesn't perform proper revocation checks. Worse still, the domain name isn't registered to Equifax, and its format looks like precisely the kind of thing a criminal operation might use to steal people's details. It's no surprise that Cisco-owned Open DNS was blocking access to the site and warning it was a suspected phishing threat.

Meanwhile, in the hours immediately following the breach disclosure, the main Equifax website was displaying debug codes, which for security reasons, is something that should never happen on any production server, especially one that is a server or two away from so much sensitive data. A mistake this serious does little to instill confidence company engineers have hardened the site against future devastating attacks.

It was bad enough that Equifax operated a website that criminals could exploit to leak so much sensitive data. That, combined with the sheer volume and sensitivity of the data spilled, was enough to make this among the worst data breaches ever. The haphazard response all but guarantees it.

I cannot recall a previous data breach in which the breached company's public outreach and response has been so haphazard and ill-conceived as the one coming right now from big-three credit bureau Equifax, which rather clumsily announced Thursday that an intrusion jeopardized Social security numbers and other information on 143 million Americans.

WEB SITE WOESAs noted in yesterday's breaking story on this breach, the Web site that Equifax advertised as the place where concerned Americans could go to find out whether they were impacted by this breach '-- equifaxsecurity2017.com '--

is completely broken at best, and little more than a stalling tactic or sham at worst.

In the early hours after the breach announcement, the site was being flagged by various browsers as a phishing threat. In some cases, people visiting the site were told they were not affected, only to find they received a different answer when they checked the site with the same information on their mobile phones.

Others (myself included) received not a yes or no answer to the question of whether we were impacted, but instead a message that credit monitoring service we were eligible for was not available and to check back later in the month. The site asked users to enter their last name and last six digits of their SSN, but at the prompting of a reader's comment I confirmed that just entering gibberish names and numbers produced the same result as the one I saw when I entered my real information: Come back on Sept. 13.

Who's responsible for this debacle? Well, Equifax of course. But most large companies that can afford to do so hire outside public relations or disaster response firms to walk them through the safest ways to notify affected consumers. In this case, Equifax appears to have hired global PR firm Edelman PR.

What gives me this idea? Until just a couple of hours ago, the copy of WordPress installed at equifaxsecurity2017.com included a publicly accessible user database entry showing a user named ''Edelman'' was the first (and only?) user registered on the site.

Code that was publicly available on equifaxsecurity2017.com until very recently showed account information for an outside PR firm.

I reached out to Edelman for more information and will update this story when I hear from them.

EARLY WARNING?In its breach disclosure Thursday, Equifax said it hired an outside computer security forensic firm to investigate as soon as it discovered unauthorized access to its Web site. ZDNet published a story Thursday saying that the outside firm was Alexandria, Va.-based Mandiant '-- a security firm bought by FireEye in 2014.

Interestingly, anyone who happened to have been monitoring look-alike domains for Equifax.com prior to yesterday's breach announcement may have had an early clue about the upcoming announcement. One interesting domain that was registered on Sept. 5, 2017 is ''equihax.com,'' which according to domain registration records was purchased by an Alexandria, Va. resident named Brandan Schondorfer.

A quick Google search shows that Schondorfer works for Mandiant. Ray Watson, a cybersecurity researcher who messaged me this morning on Twitter about this curiosity, said it is likely that Mandiant has been registering domains that might by attractive to phishers hoping to take advantage of public attention to the breach and spoof Equifax's domain.

Watson said it's equally likely the equihax.com domain was registered to keep it out of the hands of people who may be looking for domain names they can use to lampoon Equifax for its breach. Schondorfer has not yet returned calls seeking comment.

EQUIFAX EXECS PULL GOLDEN PARACHUTES?Bloomberg moved a story yesterday indicating that three top executives at Equifax sold millions of dollars worth of stock during the time between when the company says it discovered the breach and when it notified the public and investors.

Shares of Equifax's stock on the New York Stock Exchange [NSYE:EFX] were down more than 13 percent at time of publication versus yesterday's price.

The executives reportedly told Bloomberg they didn't know about the breach when they sold their shares. A law firm in New York has already announced it is investigating potential insider trading claims against Equifax.

CLASS ACTION WAIVER?Yesterday's story here pointed out the gross conflict of interest in Equifax's consumer remedy for this breach: Offering a year's worth of free credit monitoring services to all Americans via its own in-house credit monitoring service.

This is particularly rich because a) why should anyone trust Equifax to do anything right security-wise after this debacle and b) these credit monitoring services typically hard-sell consumers to sign up for paid credit protection plans when the free coverage expires.

I have repeatedly urged readers to consider putting a security freeze on their accounts in lieu of or in addition to accepting these free credit monitoring offers, noting that credit monitoring services don't protect you against identity theft (the most you can hope for is they alert you when ID thieves do steal your identity), while security freezes can prevent thieves from taking out new lines of credit in your name.

Several readers have written in to point out some legalese in the terms of service the Equifax requires all users to acknowledge before signing up for the service seems to include legal verbiage suggesting that those who do sign up for the free service will waive their rights to participate in future class action lawsuits against the company.

KrebsOnSecurity is still awaiting word from an actual lawyer who's looking at this contract, but let me offer my own two cents on this. Equifax will almost certainly see itself the target of multiple class action lawsuits as a result of this breach, but there is no guarantee those lawsuits will go the distance and result in a monetary windfall for affected consumers.

Even when these cases do result in a win for the plaintiff class, it can take years. After KrebsOnSecurity broke the story in 2013 that Experian had given access to 200 million consumer records to Vietnamese man running an identity theft service, two different law firms filed class action suits against Experian.

That case was ultimately tossed out of federal court and remanded to state court, where it is ongoing. That case was filed in 2015.

To close out the subject of civil lawsuits as a way to hold companies accountable for sloppy security, class actions '-- even when successful '-- rarely result in much of a financial benefit for affected consumers (very often the ''reward'' is a gift card or two-digit dollar amount per victim), while greatly enriching law firms that file the suits.

It's my view that these class action lawsuits serve principally to take the pressure off of lawmakers and regulators to do something that might actually prevent more sloppy security practices in the future for the victim culpable companies. And as I noted in yesterday's story, the credit bureaus have shown themselves time and again to terribly unreliable stewards of sensitive consumer data: This time, the intruders were able to get in because Equifax apparently fell behind in patching its Internet-facing Web applications.

In May, KrebsOnSecurity reported that fraudsters exploited lax security at Equifax's TALX payroll division, which provides online payroll, HR and tax services. In 2015, a breach at Experian jeopardized the personal data on at least 15 million consumers.

CAPITALIZING ON FEARSpeaking of Experian, the company is now taking advantage of public fear over the breach '-- via hashtag #equifaxbreach, for example '-- to sign people up for their cleverly-named ''CreditLock'' subscription service (again, hat tip to @rayjwatson).

''When you have Experian Identity Theft Protection, you can instantly lock or unlock your Experian Credit File with the simple click of a button,'' the ad enthuses. ''Experian gives you instant access to your credit report.''

First off, all consumers have the legal right to instant access to their credit report via the Web site, annualcreditreport.com. This site, mandated by Congress, gives consumers the right to one free credit report from each of the three major bureaus (Equifax, Trans Union and Experian) every year.

Second, all consumers have a right to request that the bureaus ''freeze'' their credit files, which bars potential creditors or anyone else from viewing your credit history or credit file unless you thaw the freeze (temporarily or permanently).

I have made no secret of my disdain for the practice of companies offering credit monitoring in the wake of a data breach '-- especially in cases where the breach only involves credit card accounts, since credit monitoring services typically only look for new account fraud and do little or nothing to prevent fraud on existing consumer credit accounts.

Credit monitoring services rarely prevent identity thieves from stealing your identity. The most you can hope for from these services is that they will alert you as soon as someone does steal your identity. Also, the services can be useful in helping victims recover from ID theft.

My advice: Sign up for credit monitoring if you can (and you're not holding out for a puny class action windfall) and then freeze your credit files at the major credit bureaus (it is generally not possible to sign up for credit monitoring services after a freeze is in place). After Equifax Inc. discovered a massive data breach that may have endangered the personal information of up to two-thirds of Americans, but before the company divulged the information, three executives sold their Equifax stock, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Equifax EFX-13.66% discovered the data breach July 29. On Aug. 1 and Aug 2., ahead of Thursday's breach announcement, several Equifax executives sold almost $2 million worth of stock combined, according to SEC documents from August.

As first reported by Bloomberg News, Chief Financial Officer John Gamble banked $946,374 on the sale, U.S. Information Solutions President Joseph Loughran made $584,099 and Consumer Information Solutions President Rodolfo Ploder earned $250,458. In the same filing, Loughran exercised an option to buy 3,000 shares at a price of $33.60.

While Equifax did not return a call from MarketWatch on Thursday, a company spokesperson told The Guardian and Gizmodo that the executives had ''no knowledge'' of the breach at the time they sold their shares.

Most executives set up what is referred to as a 10b5-1 plan to sell shares on regular schedules, in order to avoid accusations of insider trading. Sales that are part of those plans are typically noted on the SEC filings, but none of the Equifax executives said they were pre-scheduled.

Equifax stock plunged more than 13% in after-hours trading following the announcement. Equifax shares were up 20% this year, double the S&P 500 index's SPX-0.15% year-to-date gain of 10.1%. The company hit an intraday record high of $147.02 on July 31.

Executive Summary

In this study, we analyze both mainstream and social media coverage of the 2016 United States presidential election. We document that the majority of mainstream media coverage was negative for both candidates, but largely followed Donald Trump's agenda: when reporting on Hillary Clinton, coverage primarily focused on the various scandals related to the Clinton Foundation and emails. When focused on Trump, major substantive issues, primarily immigration, were prominent. Indeed, immigration emerged as a central issue in the campaign and served as a defining issue for the Trump campaign.

We find that the structure and composition of media on the right and left are quite different. The leading media on the right and left are rooted in different traditions and journalistic practices. On the conservative side, more attention was paid to pro-Trump, highly partisan media outlets. On the liberal side, by contrast, the center of gravity was made up largely of long-standing media organizations steeped in the traditions and practices of objective journalism.

Our data supports lines of research on polarization in American politics that focus on the asymmetric patterns between the left and the right, rather than studies that see polarization as a general historical phenomenon, driven by technology or other mechanisms that apply across the partisan divide.

The analysis includes the evaluation and mapping of the media landscape from several perspectives and is based on large-scale data collection of media stories published on the web and shared on Twitter.

Overview of Methods

Cross-linking patterns between media sources offer a view of authority and prominence within the media world.

The sharing of media sources by users on Twitter and Facebook provides a broader perspective on the role and influence of media sources among people engaged in politics through Twitter and Facebook.

The differential media sharing patterns of Trump and Clinton supporters on Twitter enable a detailed analysis of the role of partisanship in the formation and function of media structures.

Content analysis using automated tools supports the tracking of topics over time among media sources.

Qualitative media analysis of individual case studies enhances our understanding of media function and structure.

Key Takeaways

Donald Trump succeeded in shaping the election agenda. Coverage of Trump overwhelmingly outperformed coverage of Clinton. Clinton's coverage was focused on scandals, while Trump's coverage focused on his core issues.

Attempts by the Clinton campaign to define her campaign on competence, experience, and policy positions were drowned out by coverage of alleged improprieties associated with the Clinton Foundation and emails. Coverage of Trump associated with immigration, jobs, and trade was greater than that on his personal scandals.

Immigration and Muslims/Islam were the two most widely covered substantive issues of the campaign.

Immigration emerged as the leading substantive issue of the campaign. Initially, the Trump campaign used a hard-line anti-immigration stance to distinguish Trump from the field of GOP contenders. Later, immigration was a wedge issue between the left and the right. Pro-Trump media sources supported this with sensationalistic, race-centric coverage of immigration focused on crime, terrorism, fear of Muslims, and disease.

While coverage of his candidacy was largely critical, Trump dominated media coverage.

The media landscape is distinctly asymmetric.

The structure of the overall media landscape shows media systems on the left and right operate differently. The asymmetric polarization of media is evident in both open web linking and social media sharing measures. Prominent media on the left are well distributed across the center, center-left, and left. On the right, prominent media are highly partisan.

Twitter is a more partisan environment than the open web media landscape.

Facebook is more partisan than Twitter.

From all of these perspectives, conservative media is more partisan and more insular than the left.

The center-left and the far right are the principal poles of the media landscape. The center of gravity of the overall landscape is the center-left. Partisan media sources on the left are integrated into this landscape and are of lesser importance than the major media outlets of the center-left. The center of attention and influence for conservative media is on the far right. The center-right is of minor importance and is the least represented portion of the media spectrum.

Conservative media disrupted.

Breitbart emerges as the nexus of conservative media. The Wall Street Journal is treated by social media users as centrist and less influential. The rising prominence of Breitbart along with relatively new outlets such as the Daily Caller marks a significant reshaping of the conservative media landscape over the past several years.

On the partisan left and right, the popularity of media sources varies significantly across the different platforms. On the left, the Huffington Post, MSNBC, and Vox are prominent on all platforms. On the right, Breitbart, Fox News, the Daily Caller, and the New York Post are popular across platforms.

On the most widely covered topic of the election, immigration, Breitbart was the most prominent site. On Twitter, it is far above the rest.

Breitbart's key role in the media landscape during the election was particularly pronounced in coverage of immigration. On Twitter, Breitbart stories on immigration were shared more than twice as often as stories from the Guardian, which ranked second.

Disinformation and propaganda are rooted in partisanship and are more prevalent on social media.

The most obvious forms of disinformation are most prevalent on social media and in the most partisan fringes of the media landscape. Greater popularity on social media than attention from media peers is a strong indicator of reporting that is partisan and, in some cases, dubious.

Among the set of top 100 media sources by inlinks or social media shares, seven sources, all from the partisan right or partisan left, receive substantially more attention on social media than links from other media outlets.

These sites do not necessarily all engage in misleading or false reporting, but they are clearly highly partisan. In this group, Gateway Pundit is in a class of its own, known for ''publishing falsehoods and spreading hoaxes.''

Disproportionate popularity on Facebook is a strong indicator of highly partisan and unreliable media.

A distinct set of websites receive a disproportionate amount of attention from Facebook compared with Twitter and media inlinks. From the list of the most prominent media, 13 sites fall into this category. Many of these sites are cited by independent sources and media reporting as progenitors of inaccurate if not blatantly false reporting. Both in form and substance, the majority of these sites are aptly described as political clickbait. Again, this does not imply equivalency across these sites. Ending the Fed is often cited as the prototypical example of a media source that published false stories. The Onion is an outlier in this group, in that it is explicitly satirical and ironic, rather than, as is the case with the others, engaging in highly partisan and dubious reporting without explicit irony.

Asymmetric vulnerabilities: The right and left were subject to media manipulation in different ways.

The more insulated right-wing media ecosystem was susceptible to sustained network propaganda and disinformation, particularly misleading negative claims about Hillary Clinton. Traditional media accountability mechanisms'--for example, fact-checking sites, media watchdog groups, and cross-media criticism'--appear to have wielded little influence on the insular conservative media sphere. Claims aimed for ''internal'' consumption within the right-wing media ecosystem were more extreme, less internally coherent, and appealed more to the ''paranoid style'' of American politics than claims intended to affect mainstream media reporting.

The institutional commitment to impartiality of media sources at the core of attention on the left meant that hyperpartisan, unreliable sources on the left did not receive the same amplification that equivalent sites on the right did.

These same standard journalistic practices were successfully manipulated by media and activists on the right to inject anti-Clinton narratives into the mainstream media narrative. A key example is the use of the leaked Democratic National Committee's emails and her campaign chairman John Podesta's emails, released through Wikileaks, and the sustained series of stories written around email-based accusations of influence peddling. Artificial intelligence can accurately guess whether people are gay or straight based on photos of their faces, according to new research suggesting that machines can have significantly better ''gaydar'' than humans.

The study from Stanford University '' which found that a computer algorithm could correctly distinguish between gay and straight men 81% of the time, and 74% for women '' has raised questions about the biological origins of sexual orientation, the ethics of facial-detection technology and the potential for this kind of software to violate people's privacy or be abused for anti-LGBT purposes.

The machine intelligence tested in the research, which was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and first reported in the Economist, was based on a sample of more than 35,000 facial images that men and women publicly posted on a US dating website. The researchers, Michal Kosinski and Yilun Wang, extracted features from the images using ''deep neural networks'', meaning a sophisticated mathematical system that learns to analyze visuals based on a large dataset.

The research found that gay men and women tended to have ''gender-atypical'' features, expressions and ''grooming styles'', essentially meaning gay men appeared more feminine and vice versa. The data also identified certain trends, including that gay men had narrower jaws, longer noses and larger foreheads than straight men, and that gay women had larger jaws and smaller foreheads compared to straight women.

Human judges performed much worse than the algorithm, accurately identifying orientation only 61% of the time for men and 54% for women. When the software reviewed five images per person, it was even more successful '' 91% of the time with men and 83% with women. Broadly, that means ''faces contain much more information about sexual orientation than can be perceived and interpreted by the human brain'', the authors wrote.

The paper suggested that the findings provide ''strong support'' for the theory that sexual orientation stems from exposure to certain hormones before birth, meaning people are born gay and being queer is not a choice. The machine's lower success rate for women also could support the notion that female sexual orientation is more fluid.

While the findings have clear limits when it comes to gender and sexuality '' people of color were not included in the study, and there was no consideration of transgender or bisexual people '' the implications for artificial intelligence (AI) are vast and alarming. With billions of facial images of people stored on social media sites and in government databases, the researchers suggested that public data could be used to detect people's sexual orientation without their consent.

It's easy to imagine spouses using the technology on partners they suspect are closeted, or teenagers using the algorithm on themselves or their peers. More frighteningly, governments that continue to prosecute LGBT people could hypothetically use the technology to out and target populations. That means building this kind of software and publicizing it is itself controversial given concerns that it could encourage harmful applications.

But the authors argued that the technology already exists, and its capabilities are important to expose so that governments and companies can proactively consider privacy risks and the need for safeguards and regulations.

''It's certainly unsettling. Like any new tool, if it gets into the wrong hands, it can be used for ill purposes,'' said Nick Rule, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, who has published research on the science of gaydar. ''If you can start profiling people based on their appearance, then identifying them and doing horrible things to them, that's really bad.''

Rule argued it was still important to develop and test this technology: ''What the authors have done here is to make a very bold statement about how powerful this can be. '... Now we know that we need protections.''

Kosinski was not available for an interview, according to a Stanford spokesperson. The professor is known for his work with Cambridge University on psychometric profiling, including using Facebook data to make conclusions about personality. Donald Trump's campaign and Brexit supporters deployed similar tools to target voters, raising concerns about the expanding use of personal data in elections.

In the Stanford study, the authors also noted that artificial intelligence could be used to explore links between facial features and a range of other phenomena, such as political views, psychological conditions or personality.

This type of research further raises concerns about the potential for scenarios like the science-fiction movie Minority Report, in which people can be arrested based solely on the prediction that they will commit a crime.

''AI can tell you anything about anyone with enough data,'' said Brian Brackeen, CEO of Kairos, a face recognition company. ''The question is as a society, do we want to know?''

Brackeen, who said the Stanford data on sexual orientation was ''startlingly correct'', said there needs to be an increased focus on privacy and tools to prevent the misuse of machine learning as it becomes more widespread and advanced.

Rule speculated about AI being used to actively discriminate against people based on a machine's interpretation of their faces: ''We should all be collectively concerned.''

In the battle of man vs. machine, machine may now have a stronger ''gaydar'' than us. According to a new study, it is now possible for technology to accurately predict '' with a high score '' whether a person is gay or straight, just by analysing a photograph.

Stanford University has tested AI's potential to accurately label a person's sexual orientation by using an algorithm on around 35,000 images . It was successful 81 per cent of the time analysing gay men and 74% when analysing an image of gay women. Dr Michal Kosinski revealed that the algorithm outperformed human beings taking the same test.

The focus of this tech includes both permanent facial features and less fixed areas, i.e. your grooming style. This means that based on the size of your forehead and the length of your nose, the machine is able to make a prediction. This feature of the machine adheres to the prenatal hormone theory of sexual orientation, which suggested gay men and women tended to have gender-atypical expression and grooming styles.

This comes from the idea that during the development process, fetuses are exposed to various levels of hormones, particularly testosterone. The researchers state that such hormones assist in developing the facial structures of the fetus which can be involved in determining sexuality, strengthening support for the argument that people are born gay, rather than choosing to be.

Dr. Michal Kosinski of Stanford University has collaborated with Yilun Wang in conducting this project. Kosinski has previously released works on Facebook data and its use for detecting personality traits. Kosinski also mentions that with the right combination of data, similar systems may be able to spot other traits such as IQ or political views, which is also pretty terrifying.

The study has been met with criticism. In a statement, Ashland Johnson of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) said: ''Imagine for a moment the potential consequences if this flawed research were used to support a brutal regime's efforts to identify and/or persecute people they believed to be gay''. Indeed, recent events in Chechnya demonstrate the violent persecution and discrimination that gay people still face around the world.

In today's heternormative society, coming out remains a personal decision and surely not something that should be guessed by another human being controlling a machine?

Regardless, the technology has a long list of limitations. Firstly, it is not proven to work on all photos or all types of people '' trans people and bi people are not accounted for. Bizarrely, no people of colour were included in the study. The software doesn't seem to be able to accurately predict for women as it can for men.

Kosinski revealed that the prediction models with the sole aim of gender resulted in less accurate predictions. It detected gay males with 57% accuracy and gay females with 58% accuracy, contradicting a previous idea that women were more fluid in their orientation and less easy to detect.

The software could be used by corporations and governments to target ads or attacks. Understandably, the study has caused a surge in anger, upset and worry within the gay community.

The legal teams for Imran Awan and Hina Alvi are close to finalizing immunity deals with the Justice Department that could spare them jail time in exchange for testimony against sitting members of Congress, federal law enforcement sources said.

FBI sources familiar with the case said late Friday that Imran Awan's legal counsel was ''deep in the process'' of structuring an immunity deal for himself and his wife with Justice Department lawyers. The deal would allow the couple to freely testify against any or all Democratic lawmakers they worked for as IT specialists, including Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

True Pundit reported on Thursday that the couple was working on a plea deal to avoid prison time. But on Friday federal sources said those talks had progressed into a likely immunity deal for the duo.

The focus of the federal probe has shifted from the bank fraud allegations against the Pakistani couple to classified intelligence breaches in Congress, FBI sources confirm.

Before Friday, Awan had agreed to cooperate with DOJ and FBI to help ''fill in gaps'' in the bank fraud case against the Pakistani couple, who were indicted Aug. 17. But as talks with the FBI and Justice Department progressed this week, Awan also agreed to have his wife return from Pakistan to be arrested and face charges, sources said, and his legal team continues to cooperate with the FBI in ''connected matters.''

The deal would avoid a lengthy extradition battle between the United States and Pakistan.

His wife, Alvi, fled to Pakistan in March despite the FBI intercepting her at Dulles International Airport. Awan tried to do the same in July but was arrested. Alvi is expected to return to the United States in late Sept., according to recently filed court records memorializing part of the new deal.

The couple now seeks a guarantee of no prison time. This could include an extended probation period for Awan without jail time, sources said.

Previously, lawyers in the case wanted the DOJ to drop conspiracy and making false statement charges against the couple to help reduce the federal sentencing guidelines, sources said. By reducing the four-count indictment to one count of bank fraud, the judge in the Awan case would have leeway within sentencing guidelines to keep one or both of the defendants out of federal prison, sources said.

On Thursday, federal sources said while the DOJ could not explicitly request reduced or no jail time for either Awan or Alvi, the Justice Department could structure its sentencing report to the judge in a specific way that makes it very clear the government is not interested in incarcerating the couple. Likewise, unless the US Attorney specifically asks for jail time at the sentencing hearing, the judge understands the defendant has cooperated, sources said.

Those stipulations would be eliminated as part of any comprehensive immunity deal that transcends ''Queen for a Day'' federal immunity.

Nobel Peace Prize Hypocrite!

Myanmar First State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Kills 100,000 Rohingya [Muslims]. All victims were Myanmar Citizens.

It is a rare occasion that I have wait decades to write about a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was a liar and malignant narcissist. Obama was almost an instant fraud when I wrote about him several years ago. Swedes awarded a Nobel Peace Prize to this completely ineffectual POTUS Obama who had done absolutely nothing to deserve it.

For a long time have I bit my lip about going off on the anointed Nobel Peace Prize winner, Myanmar [Burma] First State Counsellor Ms. Aung San Sui Kyi. I knew about her true vitriolic, misanthropic, sadistic character which she had been hiding for decades while in the 'presumed' fifteen year house arrest by the Burmese military.

As someone who had travelled to that lovely country of Myanmar [Burma], I was fully cognizant of the importance of the public personae of Aung San Sui Kyi. She had carefully crafted an image where she was a martyr for freedom, transparency, and voting rights. She and her handlers contrived a narrative that made her the most prominent political prisoner in the world. She made certain that books, movies and even songs were written about her self-inflicted 'house arrest' which in reality meant nothing. She was wont to understate her Machiavellian maneuvers to make herself appear so gallantly self-sacrificing and caring. All for naught!!

I became nauseous when I heard one of my family members sing a song in French which had been written about her alleged suffering [ U2's Bono wrote the song 'Walk On']. My relative was smart enough to bracket her song with comments that referred to my personal skepticism about this Burmese self-anointed martyr.

In 2015, Aung became a Pyithu Hluttaw MP, winning 86% of the seats in the Assembly of the Union with her party backed by the military the same military that had once 'placed her under house arrest'. [Wikipedia].

Aung furthered her hero-image with two movies about her alleged suffering in solitary detention. International producers ensured these propaganda pieces were shown all over the world. They included John Boorman's 1995 film ''Beyond Rangoon'' and Luc Besson's 2011 film, ''The Lady'' in which her part was played by Adelle Lutz. [Wikipedia].

Yet, Aung's true misanthropic character revealed itself when 100,000 Burmese citizens of Muslim faith were beaten and killed. (Rohingya Refugee Crisis). Aung insisted that these minority Muslims were not citizens but foreigners.

In 2016, the state expert from Queen Mary University of London warned Suu Kyi that she is legitimizing genocide in Myanmar. ''Despite continued persecution of the Rohingya well into 2017, Suu Kyi was not even admitting, let alone trying to stop the army's well-documented campaign of rape, murder, destruction against Rohingya villages''. Even the 14th Dalai Lama begged her on two occasions to stop the genocide. She refused his pleas. The famous British magazine ''The Economist'' stated the following:

''her halo has even slipped among foreign human-rights lobbyists, disappointed at her failure to make clear a stand on behalf of her own minority Muslim citizens.''

Aung should be stripped of all her awards which she had falsely garnered in the faux name of humanity and peace:

The Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu has called on Aung San Suu Kyi to end military-led operations against Myanmar's Rohingya minority, which have driven 270,000 refugees from the country in the past fortnight.

The 85-year old archbishop said the ''unfolding horror'' and ''ethnic cleansing'' in the country's Rahkine region had forced him to speak out against the woman he admired and considered ''a dearly beloved sister''.

Despite Aung San Suu Kyi defending her government's handling of the growing crisis, Tutu urged his fellow Nobel peace price winner to intervene.

''I am now elderly, decrepit and formally retired, but breaking my vow to remain silent on public affairs out of profound sadness,'' he wrote in a letter posted on social media.

''For years I had a photograph of you on my desk to remind me of the injustice and sacrifice you endured out of your love and commitment for Myanmar's people. You symbolised righteousness.

''Your emergence into public life allayed our concerns about violence being perpetrated against members of the Rohingya. But what some have called 'ethnic cleansing' and others 'a slow genocide' has persisted '' and recently accelerated.

''It is incongruous for a symbol of righteousness to lead such a country,'' said the anti-apartheid activist. ''If the political price of your ascension to the highest office in Myanmar is your silence, the price is surely too steep.''

Tutu joined the growing list of voices calling on Aung San Suu Kyi to do more to protect Myanmar's persecuted Muslim minority as the United Nations estimated the number of refugees to have crossed into Bangladesh had reached about 270,000.

A spokeswoman for the UN high commissioner for refugees, Vivian Tan, said the revised figure '' an increase of nearly 130,000 on Thursday's estimates '' did not necessarily reflect new arrivals in the past 24 hours, ''but that we have identified more people in different areas that we were not aware of before''.

''The numbers are so alarming. It really means we have to step up our response and that the situation in Myanmar has to be addressed urgently,'' Tan told Agence France-Presse.

Malala Yousafzai, the youngest-ever peace prize winner, said on Monday ''the world is waiting'' for Aung San Suu Kyi to act.

The Battle for Myanmar's Buddhist spirit '' video''Every time I see the news, my heart breaks,'' she wrote on Twitter. ''Over the last several years, I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment. I am still waiting for my fellow Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same''.

The organisation that oversees the Nobel peace prize said Aung Sang Suu Kyi's 1991 prize cannot be revoked.

Olav Nj¸lstad, head of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told AP that neither the will of the prize's founder, Alfred Nobel, nor the Nobel Foundation's rules provide for the possibility of withdrawing the honour from laureates.

''It is not possible to strip a Nobel peace prize laureate of his or her award once bestowed,'' Nj¸lstad wrote in an email. ''None of the prize awarding committees in Stockholm and Oslo has ever considered revoking a prize after it has been awarded.''

On Tuesday, the United Nations secretary general, Ant"nio Guterres, said the government clearance operations in Rakhine ''risked'' ethnic cleansing. A Change.org petition to revoke Aung San Suu Kyi's Nobel peace prize had reached 390,000 signatures by Friday.

On Thursday, Aung San Suu Kyi made her first spoken remarks on the crisis in Rakhine since government crackdowns began last month. ''It is a little unreasonable to expect us to solve the issue in 18 months,'' she told the Delhi-based network Asian News International. ''The situation in Rakhine has been such since many decades. It goes back to pre-colonial times.''

According to UN estimates, up to 300,000 Rohingya could be displaced into Bangladesh due to ''clearance operations'' by the Tatmadaw, Myanmar's armed forces.

The army says it is rooting out ''terrorists'' among the ethnic Muslim population, after fighters from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked dozens of police posts on 25 August.

The Myanmar government claims about 400 people have been killed so far, though UN officials estimate the death toll to be more than 1,000.

On Friday, Tutu used his open letter to urge Aung San Suu Kyi to intervene and speak out.

''As we witness the unfolding horror we pray for you to be courageous and resilient again,'' he said. ''We pray for you to speak out for justice, human rights and the unity of your people. We pray for you to intervene in the escalating crisis and guide your people back towards the path of righteousness again.

The Associated Press shirked their own style guide in a recently published article, using ''undocumented citizens'' in lieu of their usual ''undocumented immigrants.''

The article with the strange reference was published on September 5 and discusses Mayor Rahm Emanuel's response to President Donald Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

''The Chicago Sun-Times reports that school officials say about a third of the school's students are undocumented citizens,'' the AP wrote.

In the same piece, AP also failed to explain that DACA only protects immigrants in the country illegally, not all ''young immigrants'' as is written in the article's lede.

It is unclear why the undocumented or illegal students would be referred to as ''citizens.'' The Chicago Sun-Times article that the AP links to never refers to illegal or undocumented immigrants as ''undocumented citizens,'' making the addition even more puzzling.

In 2013, the Associated Press dropped ''illegal immigrant'' from their stylebook and said they would not describe people as illegal, but would instead focus on people's actions being illegal.

Here in famously pet-friendly Los Angeles, I encounter dogs that are blatantly not service animals on a daily basis. Recently, during a morning visit to my local caf(C), I laughed when a woman whose tiny dog was thrashing around at the limits of its leash and barking fiercely at other customers loudly proclaimed that it was a service animal. ''It's my service dog,'' she said to me, scowling. ''You're not allowed to ask me why I need it!''

Data backs my anecdote up. A study conducted at the University of California at Davis found that the number of ''therapy dogs'' or ''emotional support animals'' registered by animal control facilities in the state increased 1,000 percent between 2002 and 2012. In 2014, a supposed service dog caused a U.S. Airways flight to make an emergency landing after repeatedly defecating in the aisle. A Google News search for ''fake service dog'' returns more than 2.2 million results.

This has recently led state governments to try and curb the problem through law. In Massachusetts, a House bill seeks to apply a $500 fine to pet owners who even falsely imply that their animal may be a service dog. In California, the penalty is $1,000 and up to six months in jail. Twelve states now have laws criminalizing the misrepresentation of a pet as a service animal. That's good, but with all the confusion surrounding what a service dog actually is, there's less and less protection for their unique status.

A new bill introduced to the Senate this summer by Wisconsin Democrat Tammy Baldwin threatens to add to the confusion even more. If it becomes law, you'll be able to take any animal on a plane simply by telling the airline that it's an ESA. Alarmingly, the bill seems to include ESAs in its definition of service animals.

Look, I get the desire to bring your pet along with you everywhere you go. My dogs are as important to me as my friends and family. The first criteria my girlfriend and I apply to where we eat, drink, and travel is whether our dogs can enjoy it with us. But out of respect for the needs of disabled people, for the incredible work that real service dogs perform, and for the people managing and patronizing these businesses, we will not lie. We do not take our pets places where they're not welcome. We never want to compromise the ability of a service dog to perform its essential duties.

As an animal lover, don't you want the same thing?

What's a Service Animal?The Americans with Disabilities Act limits the definition of a service animal to one that is trained to perform ''work or tasks'' in the aid of a disabled person. So, while a dog that is trained to calm a person suffering an anxiety attack due to post-traumatic stress disorder is considered a service dog, a dog whose mere presence calms a person is not. The act states, ''dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.''

That same law makes no requirements or provisions for any registration, licensing, or documentation of service animals. It also prohibits businesses or individuals from asking a disabled person for proof that their dog is a service animal. In fact, the ADA permits only two questions to be asked of people with service animals: Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? What task is the dog trained to perform? That's it. No inquiry can be made about the nature of the disability and no proof can be requested, nor are there any licenses or documents to prove a dog is a service animal.

Emotional support animals (let's just use that as a catchall for any dog that provides comfort but does not perform a specific task) are specifically excluded by the ADA, and access for them is not provided by that law. Businesses and similar entities are left to define their own policies. Amtrak, for instance, does not consider ESAs to be service animals and does not permit them to ride in passenger areas on its trains.

Because ESAs provide benefit by their mere presence, there's no burden of training for them like there is for a service dog. The presence of untrained, or poorly trained dogs in public places, and on crowded airplanes can lead to significant problems. In June, an ESA aboard an airplane attacked the human seated next to it, resulting in severe injury.

So where's the confusion come from, and why are there so many pets on airplanes these days? The Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) does recognize ESAs and mandates that they be allowed on planes. It also goes further to place a burden of proof on owners of both service animals and ESAs.

The Impact Pets Have on Service Dogs''Another dog once spent an entire flight barking at my dog,'' relates Randy Pierce, who's been totally blind for the past 17 years. ''My dog was not barking back, but the barking was changing her behavior. That makes it harder for her to do her job; she loses her focus. I'm 6'4", so if she loses her focus, it means I'm going to hit my head on an exit sign or a doorway or, if we're on a street, maybe even step out into traffic.''

I also spoke with my friend Kent Kunitsugu, whose 12-year-old son, Hayden, suffers from epileptic seizures. Their dog, Lola, is trained to smell the sweat associated with an oncoming seizure, alert Hayden and his parents, and then lay across him during a seizure to comfort and protect him. ''We often have to ask people to get their pets away from ours, because it's a distraction, and the dog needs to pay full attention to my son,'' explains Kunitsugu. ''People think we're being assholes, but we can't afford a distraction.''

Pierce's dog, Autumn, completely ignores other dogs, doesn't beg for food, sits quietly for the duration of long flights, and generally minimizes her impact. That's the result of lots of money'--service dogs cost upwards of $20,000'--and thousands of hours of training. Pierce, for example, has developed a routine with Autumn that involves the dog communicating when she needs to go to the bathroom, and then doing so in a specific orientation to Pierce that enables him to easily find it and collect it in a baggie. A true service dog is essential to its human partner's well being, as well as a huge financial investment that other untrained dogs in public places put at risk.

The increasing presence of ESAs on flights, and in businesses has also combined with confusion around the law to create a backlash that's impacting true service dogs, in addition to pets.

"On that flight, I overheard the flight attendant remark to her colleague that she wished they wouldn't allow service dogs," describes Pierce. His disability is obvious, but that's not always the case for people who need service dogs, and those with disabilities already find going out in public difficult and intimidating. Fake service dogs are giving real ones a bad reputation.

Dozens of websites and services claim to offer registry, certification, licenses, or other documentation for service dogs'--all scams, as the ADA neither defines or requires any such proof.

To take your emotional support animal on an airplane, all you need is a letter from a licensed mental health professional that's on letterhead, signed, and less than a year old. You can buy those online for a few bucks: news investigations have found psychologists offering to sell them to otherwise undiagnosed clients. Heck, most of us could probably counterfeit one using Photoshop.

''In order to be a service dog, that dog has to be trained to perform a task, and there has to be a recognized disability,'' explains Pierce. ''I've met a lot of people who tell me this is their emotional support animal, but what they've just told me is they don't understand the law.''

Pierce is frustrated that the law is so vague, often misunderstood, and simply used as an excuse to bring pets somewhere they don't belong. Because you can only ask if a person with a service dog has a disability and what tasks the dog is trained to perform, most businesses and other services simply don't question service dogs at all. And most people with emotional support animals don't realize that their pets aren't actually guaranteed equal access by the ADA, or any other law, outside of air travel.

Really the only mechanism available to legitimate service dog owners is to sue a business that denies them access, which just worsens the problem. ''The owners of most places are intimidated,'' says Pierce. ''They don't want a lawsuit on their hands for being wrong, and they don't know what their rights are, so they don't ask questions.''

Animal Lovers Must UniteWe find ourselves in a society that requires you to present a diagnosis of mental illness (or soon, just a verbal claim of such) if you want to safely fly with your dog. The system is broken.

In 2014, 25,000 emotional support animals boarded Jet Blue flights alone. Why isn't there an airline that offers safe transport for pets? Or specific pet-friendly flights on certain popular routes?

And why aren't there more dog-friendly restaurants, bars, music venues, and other businesses? There are nearly 90 million pet dogs in this country. That's a huge market, but also a huge problem when us owners act inappropriately. As animal lovers, creating and supporting dog-friendly businesses should be our priority. Acting selfishly to the detriment of others will not create a more dog-friendly future. We want to be able to take our dogs to more places, more often, but we have to make sure doing so is appropriate and doesn't infringe on the rights and well-being of people who need real service dogs.

The American Kennel Club offers a Canine Good Citizen certification after a formal process of testing and training good behavior. If you want to bring your dog into a caf(C), why aren't you being asked to produce evidence of that, rather than falsely stating that the business owner has to permit your emotional support animal?

''Instead of looking at ourselves as service dog users and faux service dog users, I like to think of all of us as dog lovers,'' says Pierce. ''When you look at it from that perspective, they're not mutually exclusive. How do we make sure all our animals are able to succeed?''

One must understand that "normal" quakes on the Pacific and American shelf are supposed to be moving lateral or the Pacific moves north. Something happened in Mexico which is Yellowstone.

See the Rockies were created by the Pacific ramming into the American plates. The Pacific went under and the American went on top. The Yellowstone caldera and the other volcanoes are the result of the crust rupture and magma being forced to the surface.

For California, there is 60 feet of plate pressure added to the fault lines, and we know there is problem north of California as Yellowstone and the Northwest have been quite active in magma generated seismic tremors.

Yale University Altered a Campus Sculpture Depicting Violence Against a Native American | artnet News

As institutions across the United States re-evaluate images of America's shameful history, Yale officials have covered part of a stone carving depicting a Puritan and a Native American outside its own Sterling Memorial Library. The alteration, made in 2016, is gaining attention in the wake of recent violence in Charlottesville and a national debate over Confederate monuments in the US.

The sculpture, which shows a Puritan man pointing a musket at a Native American man, was partially cemented over with a layer of stone that hides the gun, according to a short August 9 post on Yale Alumni Magazine, written by alumnus Mark Alden Branch.

''If you were especially observant during your years on campus,'' Branch wrote, ''you may have noticed a stone carving by the York Street entrance to Sterling Memorial Library that depict[s] a hostile encounter: a Puritan pointing a musket at a Native American,''

According to Branch's post, the library decided to reopen the long-disused entrance as the front door of its new Center for Teaching and Learning, launched in 2014. But head librarian Susan Gibbons and the university's more recently formed Committee on Art in Public Spaces decided the carving's ''presence at a major entrance to Sterling was not appropriate.'' The layer of stone covering the Puritan's musket can be removed in the future without damaging the original carving, Gibbons reportedly told Branch.

Branch and Gibbons did not respond to requests for comment for this story.

In an email statement to artnet News, Yale University President Peter Salovey echoed Branch's account, acknowledging that the carving was altered to accommodate the new library entrance. ''In 2016, as part of a project to convert a little-used doorway into a new main entrance to Sterling Library, a decision was made to partially cover with removable stonework the depiction, carved over the doorway, of a musket held by a Puritan next to a Native American,'' he wrote.

Salovey went on to point out that altering campus artwork runs counter to a new policy the university adopted sometime after the stone carving was covered. ''Consistent with principles subsequently adopted by the university and now in place, Yale's policy is not to make alterations to works of art on its campus,'' he said in the statement.

Salovey added that the university plans to ''recognize the original carving'' in the future. When asked how the school intends to acknowledge the original work'--and whether it will involve relocation'--a representative for Salovey said in an email that those plans have ''yet to be determined.''

This is not the first time Yale has been embroiled in a controversy over campus art. Last summer, as reported by artnet News, an employee at Yale smashed a window that he described as ''a racist, very degrading'' stained-glass panel in the college named after Yale alumnus John C. Calhoun, a former US vice president who advocated for the protection of slave plantations in the antebellum South. The panel, which was located in the building's dining hall, depicted two African-American figures carrying baskets of cotton on their heads.

Several months before the incident, Salovey initiated the Committee on Art in Public Spaces to survey the public art on campus. As a result, a number of stained-glass windows were already scheduled to be removed from Calhoun College and conserved for study and display.

The Committee offers an online form where Yale community members can express their views about public art on the campus.

Update, 8/22: In a statement emailed to artnet News on Tuesday, Yale's president, Peter Salovey, announced plans to restore the original stone sculpture and remove it from Sterling Memorial Library's main entrance. The cement that covers the musket stonework will be removed, and the sculpture will be relocated and ''made available for study and viewing, and written material will accompany it and place it in historical context,'' according to the statement.

Salovey did not indicate where the sculpture will be placed, but he explained the decision to restore and remove the carving this way:

We cannot make alterations to works of art on our campus. Such alteration represents an erasure of history, which is entirely inappropriate at a university. We are obligated to allow students and others to view such images, even when they are offensive, and to study and learn from them. In carrying out this obligation, we also have a responsibility to provide information that helps all viewers understand the meaning of the image. We do so in a setting that clearly communicates that the content of the image is not being honored or even taken lightly but, rather, is deserving of thoughtful consideration and reflection.

Michael Moore used explicit terms Tuesday night to describe the degree to which he believes supporters of President Trump have enabled the president.

"If you hold down the woman while the rapist is raping her, and you didn't rape her, are you a rapist?" Moore, a filmmaker and liberal activist, told CNN's Don Lemon. "Let's cut the BS and start speaking honestly."

Lemon told Moore he sounded like he was comparing Trump voters to rapists.

"That's a very powerful and uncomfortable anecdote you share and people will think you're comparing Trump voters to rapists," Lemon said.

Moore replied: "Yeah, it's uncomfortable, isn't it?"

Moore was reacting to Trump's comments Tuesday in which the president resorted to blaming "both sides' for a violent rally in Charlottesville, Va., this past weekend organized by white nationalist groups.

Trump told reporters at Trump Tower that there were "fine people" amongst those protesting with white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

Republicans and Democrats roundly criticized Trump's latest comments, saying he was emboldening white supremacists by equating them with other groups.

Moore went much further.

"He's absolutely a racist," Moore said of Trump.

Moore urged Trump voters to take a look in the mirror and determine if they want to enable the president '-- because if they do, that makes them a racist.

"If you still support the racist, you are the racist," Moore said. "That has to end. I'm not sorry, I'm not letting anybody off the hook here."

Report: Drug company faked cancer patients to sell drug

(CNN) When Insys Therapeutics got approval to sell an ultra-powerful opioid for cancer patients with acute pain in 2012, it soon discovered a problem: finding enough cancer patients to use the drug.

To boost sales, the company allegedly took patients who didn't have cancer and made it look like they did.

The drug maker used a combination of tactics, such as falsifying medical records, misleading insurance companies and providing kickbacks to doctors in league with the company, according to a federal indictment and ongoing congressional investigation by Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat from Missouri.

The new report by McCaskill's office released Wednesday includes allegations about just how far the company went to push prescriptions of its sprayable form of fentanyl, Subsys.

Because of the high cost associated with Subsys, most insurers wouldn't pay for it unless it was approved in advance. That process, likely familiar to anyone who's taken an expensive medication, is called "prior-authorization."

So Insys set up an elaborate charade -- with employees that pretended to be doctors' offices -- to fool insurance companies into approving the drug, according to the Senate report.

Insys said in a statement provided to CNN on Wednesday that it disagreed with "certain characterizations in the staff report released today."

"The report relates to activities of former employees of our company and matters that the company has addressed in its own efforts and in connection with investigations by the Department of Justice and state attorney general offices," the company said, adding that "strengthening of our compliance program has been a significant focus for more than four years," and that Insys had "invested significant resources in establishing an effective compliance program."

The Senate report documented how beginning in 2014, when someone needed to obtain prior approval for a Subsys prescription, it was actually an Insys employee who called the insurer and its affiliates to persuade them. The insurers thought they were talking to someone who worked for the actual patient's doctor, and the Insys employees had a carefully crafted script designed to intentionally leave that impression, according to the report.

Insys even went so far as to obscure its outgoing phone number on caller IDs, so that calls wouldn't be traced back to the company, the report said. And if an insurer needed a phone number for a return call, company employees "reportedly provided a 1-800 number manned by another Insys representative -- instead of contact information for the prescribing physician," according to McCaskill's report.

During such calls, there was usually a key question: did the patient have acute pain caused by cancer, known as "breakthrough" pain? Cancer was a requirement for prior clearance to prescribe Subsys.

Insys got around this by finding calculated ways for its employees to create the impression on the phone calls that the answer was yes, they did have cancer, without explicitly saying so, according to the report.

A recording of a such a call, obtained by McCaskill's investigators and released Wednesday, shows the wordplay Insys employees engaged in.

The call involves a New Jersey woman named Sarah Fuller, who did not have cancer but was nevertheless prescribed Subsys by her doctor. Fuller died last year of a Subsys overdose, and state authorities later petitioned to have her doctor's license temporarily suspended.

On the call, the Insys employee began by saying she was "with" the office of Fuller's doctor, and subsequently claimed she was "calling from the doctor's office."

"It's an outright falsehood," McCaskill told reporters on Wednesday. "She's not calling from the doctor's office."

The Insys employee is then heard suggesting she's thumbing through Fuller's paperwork, trying to find the diagnosis in the medical records.

She casually drops the line -- sounding as if she's reading from the patient's records -- that Subsys is "intended for the management of breakthrough cancer pain," without explicitly saying Fuller herself has cancer. The Insys employee then tells the insurance representative that Fuller suffers from "breakthrough pain" -- leaving out the word "cancer."

Later in the call, a different insurance representative asks flatly if the Subsys will be used to treat "breakthrough cancer pain or not," and the Insys employee first responds that there's "no code for breakthrough cancer pain."

When the representative for the insurance affiliate reiterates that he wanted to "make sure that I heard you correctly," the Insys employee tells him: "It's for breakthrough pain, yeah," again leaving out the word cancer.

The company's president and CEO Saeed Motahari submitted a letter to congressional investigators dated September 1 to respond to McCaskill's probe.

"These mistakes and actions are not indicative of the people that are currently employed at Insys," Motahari wrote, according to a copy of the letter obtained by CNN.

He wrote that Insys had "completely transformed its employee base over the last several years," and has "actively taken the appropriate steps to place ethical standards of conduct and patient interests at the heart of our business decisions."

Insys is currently in the midst of an avalanche of criminal and civil legal trouble.

In December, federal prosecutors in Boston criminally charged six former Insys executives, including its former CEO, with fraud and racketeering charges related to Subsys. Prosecutors described a "nationwide conspiracy to bribe medical practitioners to unnecessarily prescribe a fentanyl-based pain medication and defraud health care insurers."

"As alleged, top executives of Insys Therapeutics, Inc. paid kickbacks and committed fraud to sell a highly potent and addictive opioid that can lead to abuse and life threatening respiratory depression," said Harold H. Shaw, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Boston field office, in a statement in December.

Other federal charges have also subsequently been brought against individuals connected to Subsys, and several state attorneys general have filed lawsuits of their own.

The six executives in the original December case have pled not guilty, and their cases are currently pending. But other former employees have since made guilty pleas.

In May, Motahari, then just weeks into his new job, told analysts on a corporate earnings call that the company hoped to resolve the federal investigation against it with a settlement.

"We continue to engage in discussions with the DOJ and remain highly committed to resolving this matter," Motahari told the analysts.

Though other shoes continue to drop.

In July, former Insys regional manager for the Southeast, Karen Hill, pled guilty in a related federal case in Alabama. She described in recorded conversations excerpted in court filings how she taught salespeople to entice doctors.

"She gave examples that some of her doctors were motivated by money, chocolate and spending time with her," federal prosecutors in Alabama said in a release announcing her plea. "When the sales representative asked Hill how to identify doctors who were financially motivated to prescribe Subsys, Hill explained that she looks for doctors that are 'money hungry,' and went on to describe how to figure out if a doctor has a 'light in their eyes' and is willing to 'play ball.'"

One of America's favorite family summer traditions is home to a simmering sexual subculture, where lovers of kink and BDSM gather among families and fairgoers. The Renaissance Faire'--family friendly, olde-worlde theme parks marketed with the tagline ''Where Fantasy Rules'''--is a veritable Disneyland for kinksters.

The festival widely considered the first modern Renaissance Faire, the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, was held in California in 1963. Just over 50 years later, that event now attracts over 20,000 participants annually, and is one of 172 registered fairs across the country, not to mention dozens of copycat festivals held in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and a handful of other countries.

A Vocativ analysis of online forums related to renaissance faires and to kink revealed that these festivals are a favorite recreational destination for some local BDSM communities. One of the world's largest BDSM forums, collarchat.com, features a number of stories from members who met their kink-partners, or first discovered BDSM, by attending a renaissance faire. Forum user CallaFirestormBW joked: ''I started off my journey into out-of-mainstream life as paid staff at a Renaissance Faire. Gotta watch those '-- they're 'gateway' recreation.''

Vocativ also found strippers and other people who participate in various kinds of sex work talking online about going to the festivals. Some of those who were discussing their trips to the faires just went for fun, like anyone else, but others went to shop for some of the costumes on sale there.

This kind of close proximity between family-friendly fantasy and sexual fantasy has caused controversy at times. In 2013 one group set up a bondage camp near the entrance of the Texas Renaissance Faire. Despite complaints from parents, a local RenFaire newsletter praised both the bondage camp and a nudist kink group called Clan Dragonborn (aka ''The Naked Knights and Disrobed Damsels'') for displaying a ''refreshing step away from the hyper-family-friendly'' direction that some faire devotees believe the festivals are taking. The bondage camp has since disappeared from festival forums, but Reddit users say that the Texas festival is still home to a clandestine BDSM camp.

When Dr. Rachel Rubin, a professor of American studies at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, set out to write a book about the history of the Renaissance Faire, one of the things she found was that even early on the festival was a hub where people gathered to celebrate certain sexual behaviors, and to discover new ones. Visitors and staff at the faire dabbled in costumes and role play, which often carried straight from the medieval fairgrounds to the bedroom after dark.

''People said with great gratitude that the Renaissance Faire introduced them to new things,'' Rubin told Vocativ. She said many of her interview subjects expressed the same sentiment: the festivals were the first place they felt they could openly display their participation in BDSM culture without feeling judged.

Buried in some of the pageantry and costumes are in-jokes and subtle tells which mean nothing to the average fairgoer, but are red flags to members of kink communities. (There have long been rumors that some people use codes in their costumes involving animal tails to suggest their sexual preferences and desires. Some people may actually do this, but it may also be largely urban legend, like ''sex bracelets'' and ''rainbow parties.'')

Many kink communities go online to share tips for finding each other in person at the faire. ''People are real careful about it,'' said Rubin. ''There are also things going on after hours with people who work at the faire. You have to be in the know to access their communication.''

It's also common for vendors of leather products, weapons, corsets and other historical paraphernalia to have private spaces where items specifically for people with an interest in BDSM or other kinks can be sold. A forum user called thishereboi described one such insider secret at a RenFaire in Michigan: ''There is a leather stand, at the fair that comes to Detroit, with a back room for kinksters. I got an awesome pair of cuffs there and they had some wonderful floggers.'' User slavekal replied: ''We got great stuff from their back room. With the release of Chrome v62 in less than 3 months, Google will begin marking non-HTTPS pages with text input fields'--like contact forms and search bars'--and all HTTP websites viewed in Incognito mode as ''NOT SECURE'' in the address bar. The company has started sending out warning emails to web owners in August as a follow-up to an announcement by Emily Schechter, Product Manager of Chrome Security Team, back in April.

Google began marking sites in Chrome v56, which was issued in January of this year. They targeted HTTP sites that collect user passwords and credit card details.

For owners to secure the information being shared among their visitors and their web server, they must start incorporating an SSL certificate. Failing to do this is risky for both parties: sites that allow the sending of information in clear text may also allow its exposure through the Internet.

Ms. Schechter also provided website owners with a handy guide on how to enable HTTPS on their servers. An additional guideline on how to avoid the ''NOT SECURE'' warning on Chrome is also available for web developers.

Looking at the way things are panning out, we can be confident that HTTPS will be the norm in no time. However, this doesn't mean that all sites using SSL certificates can and should be trusted.

Google intended to separate phishing sites from legitimate ones with the marking of insecure sites, as Help Net Security noted in an article. Unfortunately, the introduction of new browser versions capable of flagging sites also promptly introduced more phishing sites using HTTPS. We've been seeing examples of this in the wild, as well, the latest of which was an Apple phishing campaign.

Discerning phishing pages from the real ones has become more challenging than ever. This is why it's important for users to familiarize themselves with other signs that they might be on a phishing page apart from the lack of SSL certificates. Fortunately, users don't have to look far from the address bar when they want to double-check that they're on the right page before entering their credentials or banking details. Keep in mind the following when scrutinizing URLs and other elements around it:

Look for letters in the URL that may have been made to look like another letter or number, or there may be additional letters or numbers in the URL. For example, examplewebsite.com may appear as examplevvebsite.com'--Catch that? The double 'v' together makes it look like the letter 'w.' This is an example of typosquatting. Here's another example: examp1ewebsite.com'--the 'l' in ''example'' is actually the number one.Look for an Extended Validation Certificate (EV SSL). You know that a trusted website has this when you see a company name beside the URL, as you can see from the below UK Paypal address. Not all sites with SSL have this, unfortunately, but some of the trusted brands online already use EV SSL, such as Bank of America, eBay, Apple, and Microsoft.

Lastly, be aware that phishers may use a free SSL certificate in their campaign to make it appear legitimate. They may also hijack sites that already have SSL in place, adding more to the veil of legitimacy they want to attain.

A source has told Sputnik that US Air Force aircraft had evacuated a group of nearly two dozen Daesh (ISIS) field commanders and militants from Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria last month. Retired US Air Force Lieut Col. Karen Kwiatkowski says this is standard operating procedure for CIA black ops looking to cover their trail after an operation.

On Thursday, a military and diplomatic source told Sputnik that USAF helicopters had evacuated 22 Daesh field commanders and militants from areas outside the city of Deir ez-Zor in late August, amid a successful operation by Syrian government forces to free the area from terrorist control. The militants were reportedly taken to northern Syria. The US-led coalition's press office told Sputnik that the allegations were "false."

Asked to comment, Karen Kwiatkowski, a retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel turned anti-neoconservative activist, told Sputnik that these evacuees were likely people that the US military and intelligence establishment wanted to protect, "particularly people with evidence that could be used against the US [during] negotiations."

"It makes a lot of sense that we would either want to kill those people or extract them before the Syrians could interrogate them," Kwiatkowski said.

"That's inconsistent with the top level message from President Trump for sure," the retired officer added. "This set of relationships that the CIA, parts of the military and the State Department have with Daesh goes [back to before] Trump's administration. It seems like they're not following his orders here, but I'm sure there's a larger agenda at stake."

Kwiatkowski recalled that while Trump himself has been "consistent about eliminating these terrorists, the CIA runs its own operations, and they don't consult with anybody; that would be consistent" from their standpoint.The activist explained that CIA black programs don't require day-to-day approval from the president. If that's what this evacuation was, "this is standard operating procedure, and they don't really care what the president says in a speech designed for the consumption of the American people."

Kwiatkowski suggested that news of the Deir ez-Zor extraction stood in clear contrast to Washington's public campaign against Daesh, including its operations against the Daesh convoy that's currently stranded on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

"That's populating our media '' that the Americans are killing Daesh, not that the Americans are rescuing Daesh," the Kwiatkowski said.

"Certainly, we are rescuing our allies. But to some extent, we are preserving people who have worked with us, people that are dealing with the financial aspects of our aid to Daesh, because that's what's going to be looked at in the autopsy of this operation. People are going to be saying: where did the money flow? Who knew about it? What was the American role? Americans will be asking that question too, not just the world."

Ultimately, asked what would impact this news would have on public support for the president, Kwiatkowski said that for those who have an understanding of the neoconservative trajectory which has dominated US policy for many years, "we don't expect as much of Trump. [But] for Trump voters, there is a problem. [They] bought into his less interventionist type of policy. He ran on that, he was elected on that. He gave some early speeches relating to this concept. That was pleasing to his supporters; it angered the neoconservatives."Today, the observer said, it's clear that either the neocons are wearing Trump down, "or have somehow otherwise convinced him to allow them to do what they want to do."

The report on the alleged US operation to rescue Daesh in Deir ez-Zor commanders has led Russian experts to call on President Trump to comment directly on the claims, and to ignore any CIA or Pentagon commentary. Speaking to Sputnik, Russian defense analyst Igor Korotchenko said that Trump "must comment on this and declare clearly: either the evacuation of the Daesh field commanders was authorized by him personally and he assumes all political responsibility for this step, or the [US] special services acted without his approval."

A former House Democrat tech staffer who fled the country to Pakistan while under criminal investigation has struck a deal with federal officials to return to the U.S. and appear at an arraignment, according to court documents.

Hina Alvi is the wife of Imran Awan, and both face charges of conspiracy and bank fraud. Both worked for Democrats for several years, and Awan worked directly for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., when she was chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

A document filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia indicates that federal prosecutors have struck a deal with Alvi that would allow her to return to the U.S., but would also require her to surrender her passport and afterwards not book any international travel. The deal only surrounds how Alvi will turn herself in, and is structured so that she can avoid being arrested in front of her children when she returns to the U.S., "during the last week of September 2017."

Alvi, and Awan in particular, are the focus of investigations by the FBI and Capitol Police regarding irregularities for purchases of some computers and other equipment which was later discovered to be missing. The pair, and their associates, could have had access to sensitive government information over the years.

In July, the Daily Caller reported that the FBI seized smashed hard drives from Awan's home.

Despite the computer-related interests, Awan and Alvi are facing charges in which federal officials claim that they used false information to obtain home equity lines of credit, and intended to send the money overseas.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA '-- Televangelist Pat Robertson told a podcast audience this week that he had a ''special message and dire plea'' for the LGBTQ community, who he referred to repeatedly as ''The Gays.'' Robertson said he wants the LGBTQ community to consider drastically cutting back on their sexual activity and limit it to ''just hand and mouth stuff.''

''I'm just afraid that God's patience with butt sex is wearing thin is all,'' Robertson said, ''and the last thing we want is to incur his wrath simply because The Gays couldn't keep their anal sex to a respectable level, is all.''

''You might think God and Jesus don't have enough free time to care about the personal sexual orientation of every human being,'' Robertson said, ''but that just shows you don't know Jesus Christ like I know him.''

Christ, reached for comment, would tell us that Robertson is ''totes cray'' and doesn't speak for all of Christendom, much less the majority of it.

''Now, look, everyone,'' Robertson said, ''I know that right now is not the time to be giving out lectures about morality. So many people are hunkering down, just trying to survive the hurricanes and flooding that comes with them. But we should also probably talk about how these darned hurricanes would stop happening if The Gays could stop doing things with each other's buttholes.''

When Hurricane Harvey made landfall last week, Robertson says he got a ''sneaking suspicion God was about to do some smitin'.'' Robertson says ''there's only so much butt play that God can turn a blind eye to.'' He said that Harvey was ''almost assuredly'' God's punishment for ''The Gays feeling to self-assured and safe in America.''

''It might seem callous, cruel, crass and frankly un-Christian to speculate about what sins caused God to punish whom,'' Robertson said, ''and it's all of those things, most assuredly. But I can't stop thinking about gay stuff myself, so I am positive God is also similarly obsessed with the private bedroom affairs of grown adults.''

He said that Americans needed a break from the ''divisive rhetoric all over the place.'' But, when he heard about Hurricane Irma gathering momentum off the coast of Florida, he knew he had to say something.

''I couldn't just sit back and watch God punish us with yet another hurricane and not tell The Gays it's prolly all their faults,'' Robertson told his podcast audience.

Robertson said he had an epiphany and thought he might be able to ''strike a compromise'' with the LGBT community. If they could agree to just limit their sexual activity to what he called the ''Catholic Priest Sexual Activation Starter Pack,'' perhaps God would stop punishing the Gulf Coast so harshly.

''So you know, just handies and blowies,'' Mr. Robertson explained.

One caller asked Robertson if he thought he might be a ''little obsessed'' with gay sex and maybe could benefit from focusing his efforts on charity and good works. Robertson laughed a big laugh. He shook his head and wagged his finger.

''Do I think about butt sex more than someone who's actually having butt sex at the time? Sure,'' Robertson said, ''But does that make me a better Christian than you? Only God can decide.''

God would later tell us that, in fact, it doesn't make Mr. Robertson a better Christian than anyone.

''Quite the opposite, actually,'' God said when reached for comment.

AUSTIN, Texas - Federal, state and local agencies are working together to institute an aggressive plan to control the mosquito population in Texas after Hurricane Harvey, Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday.

Abbott said that officials are working to prioritize areas for mosquito spraying and that local agencies have already started. He said state spraying is expected to begin this week.

''The Department of Defense will help with wide-area spraying,'' Abbott said.

Abbott said that getting ahead of the problem immediately after the storm will hopefully curtail what he described as a ''meaningful mosquito outbreak.''

''I think if we can do an aggressive job of containing this over the first 30 days after the storm, we will be able to get it under control,'' he said.

Abbott said 100 percent of funding for spraying is covered by the federal government in the first month after a storm.

Residents who are returning to flood-ravaged areas should be wary of bacterial infections and tetanus, Abbott said. He said people should ensure scratches and scrapes are treated and bandaged and that they are current on their tetanus vaccine.

Abbott also said that officials are still surveying state and federal disposal sites, but no issues have been noted thus far.

California Democrat Maxine Waters thinks white nationalists and the KKK are trying to kill her.

At least she suggested as much during a House subcommittee hearing on terrorism and illicit financing when she asked what she and others could do about white nationalists and KKK members who threaten them on the Internet.

''What can we do to deal with the KKK, the white nationalists, the extremists, the alt-right?'' Waters, who serves as ranking member of the House Committee on Financial Services, asked during a Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance hearing. 'They're on the internet, they're Breitbart. If you look at the YouTube, you see how much they want to kill me and others. What can we do?'''

''Extremists radicalized by foreign terror groups are not the only terrorists with the capacity to target and kill American citizens,'' Waters said. ''Indeed, domestic terror attacks have become more frequent in recent years.''

The hearing was intended to discuss ''lone-wolf'' terrorist threats, with a focus on the financial aspects of terror plots, according to PJ Media.

Seamus Hughes, deputy director for George Washington University's Program on Extremism and former senior counterterrorism advisor for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, told Waters that domestic terrorists are just as big a threat as foreign born terrorists.

''You should be worried about the Orlando shooters, the Omar Mateens of the world as much as you are the James Fields and the Dylann Roofs of the world,'' Hughes said.

Waters responded by reeling off a long list of domestic attacks including the Ruby Ridge standoff in 1992, the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting in 2009, the Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting in 2012, the Los Angeles International Airport shooting in 2013, the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting in 2015, the Portland train attack this year and, of course, Charlottesville.

Hughes, who testified at the hearing, described the creative ways in which domestic terror groups like an offshoot of the Aryan Nation finance their activities. The group robbed several armored vehicles in the 1980s and successfully laundered more than $4 million to be used in financing and arming white nationalist groups. Hughes explained how Army Private Isaac Aguigui murdered his pregnant wife in 2011, collected about $500,000 in insurance money and then purchased $30,000 worth of guns and ammunition for his militia group Forever Enduring Always Ready, a group that had planned to assassinate President Barack Obama.

''What can we do to deal with the KKK, the white nationalists, the extremists, the alt-right?'' If you look at the YouTube, you see how much they want to kill me and others. What can we do?''

The hearing was held to discuss small-scale and ''lone-wolf'' terrorist threats, with much of the focus on the financial aspects of terror plots. Mateen is the ISIS-linked terrorist who killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., in 2016. Fields is the 20-year-old Ohio man charged with ramming his Dodge Challenger into counter-protesters after a white nationalist rally last month in Charlottesville, Va., killing one person and injuring 19. Roof is the white supremacist from South Carolina who has been convicted of opening fire inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., in 2015, killing nine African-American church members.

Waters reeled off a long list of domestic terror, including the Ruby Ridge standoff in 1992, the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting 2009, the Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting in 2012, the Los Angeles International Airport shooting in 2013, the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting in 2015, the Portland train attack this year and Charlottesville.

According to Hughes, domestic terror groups are not under the same pressures as foreign terror groups to disguise the funding mechanisms for their terror plots, given that financing for groups like ISIS, al-Qaeda and Hezbollah are subject to statutory designations on material support.

Hughes described the creative ways in which domestic groups have financed their terror activities. For example, an offshoot of the Aryan Nations, The Order, robbed several armored vehicles in the 1980s, laundering more than $4 million to be used in financing and arming white nationalist groups. He described how in 2011, Army Pvt. Isaac Aguigui murdered his pregnant wife, collected about $500,000 in insurance money and then purchased $30,000 worth of guns and ammunition for his militia group Forever Enduring Always Ready, a group that had plans of assassinating President Obama.

Stephen Colbert returned to The Late Show this week after a two-week vacation, and, given the constant chaos of the Trump administration, there was quite a bit he missed.

The comedian didn't waste any time, ripping President Trump's bizarre Hurricane Harvey response'--wherein the commander in chief hawked a new line of USA hats, marveled at the size of the crowd he received, and failed to meet with a single victim of the devastating natural disaster during his first go-around'--and the president's creepy story about his 35-year-old daughter Ivanka, who he has a history of sexually objectifying, addressing him as ''Daddy.''

Well, on Thursday, Colbert got around to covering Steve Bannon's ''conscious uncoupling'' with the Trump administration.

''As so many things happened, I really missed the chance to talk about some big stuff'--especially the exit of White House strategist (and Proactiv 'before' model) Steve Bannon,'' cracked Colbert.

''Technically, I guess, Bannon wasn't fired because on the day he left the administration issued a statement that said, 'White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve's last day,''' said Colbert. ''Yes, it was a 'mutual agreement.' The same way my college girlfriend and I 'mutually agreed' that she'd be happier having sex with Gary.''

The reason for Colbert's Bannon focus is that the former chief White House strategist (and current Breitbart czar) will be sitting down for his first post-breakup interview with Charlie Rose on Sunday's 60 Minutes'--a show on the same network as The Late Show.

In a preview clip of the exchange, Bannon (who identifies as a Catholic) lashed out at the Catholic Church'--and Cardinal Timothy Dolan'--for supporting DACA.

''The Catholic Church has been terrible about this. The bishops have been terrible about this. By the way, you know why? You know why?!'' said a red-faced Bannon. ''Because, unable to really come to grips with the problems in the church, they need illegal aliens. They need illegal aliens to fill the churches. It's obvious on the face of it.''

''Yeah, it's obvious on the face of it that the church is just cynically welcoming in strangers who desperately need help so the bishops can get into heaven. The fix is in. They're just buttering up the big guy,'' fired back Colbert, an avowed Catholic and Sunday School teacher.

Bannon also defended President Trump's heavily criticized reaction to the neo-Nazi march on Charlottesville, with the president stating there was violence ''on many sides'' and ''good people'' on both sides.

''By the way, after the Charlottesville situation'--that's what I told John Kelly'--I was the only guy that came out and tried to defend him. I was the only guy that said, 'He's talking about something that's'... taking it up to a higher level,''' muttered Bannon.

''Yeah, he's definitely taking it to a higher level. I'd say his support is about up there. Right around here,'' said Colbert, delivering the Nazi salute. ''Or over here,'' he added, delivering another mock Nazi salute. ''Somewhere up there.''

As Hillary Clinton begins a book tour to promote her 2016 campaign autopsy ''What Happened,'' video has begun to swirl online of a 2014 interview between her and CNN's Christiane Amanpour to promote her previous book, ''Hard Choices.''

During the exchange, Clinton had some tough words for the children of illegal immigrants, including waves of unaccompanied minors coming in 2014 '-- telling Amanpour that the United States was a nation of laws and that they probably had to go.

''We have to send a clear message, just because your child gets across the border, that doesn't mean the child gets to stay,'' said Clinton ''So, we don't want to send a message that is contrary to our laws or will encourage more children to make that dangerous journey.''

''So, you're saying they should be sent back now?'' Amanpour inquired.

''Well, they should be sent back as soon as it can be determined who responsible adults in their families are, because there are concerns whether all of them should be sent back,'' said Clinton. ''But I think all of them who can be should be reunited with their families.''

The comments came as part of a broader immigration discussion in which Clinton reiterated her support for comprehensive immigration reform.

AMANPOUR: Such an important issue. And what about right now? As we're seeing thousands of children come across '--

CLINTON: Oh.

AMANPOUR: '-- shantied off into makeshift shelters.

CLINTON: It's horrible.

AMANPOUR: Hard choice '-- let them stay in the United States or send them back?

CLINTON: Well, two quick points. One, the numbers are increasing dramatically. And the main reason I believe why that's happening is that the violence in certain of those Central American countries is increasing dramatically. And there is not sufficient law enforcement or will on the part of the governments of those countries to try to deal with this exponential increase in violence, drug trafficking, the drug cartels, and many children are fleeing from that violence.

AMANPOUR: Should they be able to stay here? It's safer.

CLINTON: Well '-- it may be safer but that's not the answer. I do not '--

AMANPOUR: Should they be sent back?

CLINTON: Well, first of all, we have to provide the best emergency care we can provide. We have children 5 and 6 years old who have come up from Central America. We need to do more to provide border security in southern Mexico.

AMANPOUR: So, you're saying they should be sent back now?

CLINTON: Well, they should be sent back as soon as it can be determined who responsible adults in their families are, because there are concerns whether all of them should be sent back. But I think all of them who can be should be reunited with their families. And just as Vice President Biden is arguing today in Central America,

we've got to do more. I started this when I was secretary to deal with the violence in this region to deal with border security.

But we have so to send a clear message, just because your child gets across the border, that doesn't mean the child gets to stay. So, we don't want to send a message that is contrary to our laws or will encourage more children to make that dangerous journey.

Needless to say, Clinton's tune changed quite a bit during her 2016 run and her post-candidate career. Just a year after her interview with Amanpour, she became a vocal immigration champion '-- specifically voicing her support for DACA.

And there were also these woke pronouncements, complete with her '''--H'' signature so you know she meant business!

If Mrs. Clinton's position on DACA/DAPA is rooted in her compassion for the children of illegal immigrants, how is that consistent with her position articulated here with regard to the children crossing the border just three years ago?

"Hurricane Irma continues to be a threat that is going to devastate the United States in either Florida or some of the southeastern states," FEMA Administrator Brock Long said at a news briefing on Friday. He warned that parts of Florida would be out of electricity for days if not longer and that more than 100,000 people may need shelter.

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma actually will lead to increased economic activity over the long run, New York Fed President William Dudley said in an interview.

Speaking just as Irma is about to start battering Florida as a Category 4 storm, Dudley said the initial impact in both human and economic costs will be harmful. But in the long run, economies tend to snap back from such major events.

"Those effects tend to be pretty transitory," Dudley said in a live interview with CNBC. "The long-run effect of these disasters unfortunately is it actually lifts economic activity because you have to rebuild all the things that have been damaged by the storms."

Dudley added that he didn't think the near-term economic damage would have much effect on Fed policy. He still believes the central bank will begin unwinding its $4.5 trillion balance sheet

"relatively soon" though he acknowledged that the timing of the next rate hike is up in the air.

In their most recent projections, Fed officials indicated one more rate hike this year on top of the two they already approved earlier. However, weak inflation data have led to dovish statements from Fed speakers, leading market participants to believe the next hike won't happen until well into 2018.

"In terms of increasing short-term rates, I think it's going to depend on how the economy evolves," he said. "On one hand, the economy is growing above trend. That implies that we need to continue to remove accommodation. On the other hand, inflation is below our target, farther below our target than we anticipated, and we also have very easy financial conditions.

"I think it's too soon to judge exactly the timing of when the next rate hike might occur. But I think the path is clear that of short-term rates are going to move gradually higher over time."

The New York Fed's GDP model is projecting 2.2 percent growth for the second quarter, a good deal below where many on Wall Street expect. However, Dudley said he is optimistic that the economy can grow slightly above the 2 percent recovery trend, thanks in part to coordinated growth around the world.

That even comes with the impact of the Harvey and Irma, which he believes will contribute to growth in subsequent quarters.

"I would expect that by the time we get to the end of the year and early 2018, the transitory negative effects of this storm I think will be over and we actually will start to see some of the benefits of the rebuilding efforts in terms of boosting the economy," Dudley said.

September 7, 2017 '-- Equifax Inc. (NYSE: EFX) today announced a cybersecurity incident potentially impacting approximately 143 million U.S. consumers. Criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability to gain access to certain files. Based on the company's investigation, the unauthorized access occurred from mid-May through July 2017. The company has found no evidence of unauthorized activity on Equifax's core consumer or commercial credit reporting databases.

The information accessed primarily includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver's license numbers. In addition, credit card numbers for approximately 209,000 U.S. consumers, and certain dispute documents with personal identifying information for approximately 182,000 U.S. consumers, were accessed. As part of its investigation of this application vulnerability, Equifax also identified unauthorized access to limited personal information for certain UK and Canadian residents. Equifax will work with UK and Canadian regulators to determine appropriate next steps. The company has found no evidence that personal information of consumers in any other country has been impacted.

Equifax discovered the unauthorized access on July 29 of this year and acted immediately to stop the intrusion. The company promptly engaged a leading, independent cybersecurity firm that has been conducting a comprehensive forensic review to determine the scope of the intrusion, including the specific data impacted. Equifax also reported the criminal access to law enforcement and continues to work with authorities. While the company's investigation is substantially complete, it remains ongoing and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.''This is clearly a disappointing event for our company, and one that strikes at the heart of who we are and what we do. I apologize to consumers and our business customers for the concern and frustration this causes,'' said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Richard F. Smith. ''We pride ourselves on being a leader in managing and protecting data, and we are conducting a thorough review of our overall security operations. We also are focused on consumer protection and have developed a comprehensive portfolio of services to support all U.S. consumers, regardless of whether they were impacted by this incident.''

Equifax has established a dedicated website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, to help consumers determine if their information has been potentially impacted and to sign up for credit file monitoring and identity theft protection. The offering, called TrustedID Premier, includes 3-Bureau credit monitoring of Equifax, Experian and TransUnion credit reports; copies of Equifax credit reports; the ability to lock and unlock Equifax credit reports; identity theft insurance; and Internet scanning for Social Security numbers '' all complimentary to U.S. consumers for one year. The website also provides additional information on steps consumers can take to protect their personal information. Equifax recommends that consumers with additional questions visit www.equifaxsecurity2017.com or contact a dedicated call center at 866-447-7559, which the company set up to assist consumers. The call center is open every day (including weekends) from 7:00 a.m. '' 1:00 a.m. Eastern time.

In addition to the website, Equifax will send direct mail notices to consumers whose credit card numbers or dispute documents with personal identifying information were impacted. Equifax also is in the process of contacting U.S. state and federal regulators and has sent written notifications to all U.S. state attorneys general, which includes Equifax contact information for regulator inquiries.

Equifax has engaged a leading, independent cybersecurity firm to conduct an assessment and provide recommendations on steps that can be taken to help prevent this type of incident from happening again.

CEO Smith said, ''I've told our entire team that our goal can't be simply to fix the problem and move on. Confronting cybersecurity risks is a daily fight. While we've made significant investments in data security, we recognize we must do more. And we will.''
